{FAMILY}: How to Use Essential Oils with Kids
I’m getting a lot of questions about essential oils and kids. The most common questions are: Is it safe for my baby? How should I apply oils? Do I need to dilute them before applying on my child?
Therapeutic grade essential oils, from the company that I use, are gentle enough to use on newborns, babies and kids, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
• Always dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil) before using it on your baby. For children under 3 years old, add 1-2 drops of essential oil to 4-8 drops of carrier oil.
• Make sure not to get the oil on the babies hands because they may rub their eyes. Always put socks on your baby’s feet after applying essential oils.
• If an oil accidentally gets into a baby’s eye, dilute with olive oil or fractionated coconut oil. NEVER with water.
• Infant skin is very sensitive, so use only the mildest of essential oils (lavender, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense)
• Infant should not ingest essential oils. Don’t apply essential oils near the infant’s mouth, nose, or eyes.
• If you are new to essential oils, I suggest to start with an into kit (Lavender, Lemon & Peppermint), or the Home Essential Kit, which comes with 10 essential oils (Breathe, Deep Blue, DigestZen, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Melaleuca, On Guard, Oregano and Peppermint) & Diffuser.
I would like to share with you my recent experience of using calming essential oil blend.
I was doing an essential oil event for Mommies and they came with the kids. One of the girls was very mean to other kids, she was hitting everyone and it was kind of hard to get her to calm down.
I asked her Mom if I could apply some oils. So, I invited this little fighter to smell the oils, the girl was very open to that. She came right to me. I put a couple of drops on the bottom of her feet and I also massaged a few drops on a back of her neck. As I was applying the oils I noticed that she was covered with scratches and bruises – so, when I say that she was a fighter it was clear that this was not just a one time event.
You would not believe the difference in this child after I applied the essential oils – the girl calmed down immediately and was sitting next to me quietly until the end of the class. Then her Mom took her home. 🙂
Here are just a few typical ways to use these amazing oils:
Calming/ Sleep: Apply 1-2 drops Lavender, Serenity, or Balance on the bottom of the feet, neck or down spine. It’s a good idea to use oils in the defuser.
Colds: Melaleuca, Lavender, Lemon – Mix 1-2 drops of each oil and diffuse. Mix 1 drop of each oil with Fractionated Coconut Oil and massage on upper chest and back every 4 hours.
Colic or tummy discomfort: Lavender, Digestzen, Fennel, Peppermint or Ginger. Mix 1 drop of one of these oils with a carrier oil and massage around belly button in a clockwise motion. May also add 1 drop of Lavender on the spine.
Crying: Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Roman chamomile – Diffuse in the air or rub 1-2 drops on a spine.
Diaper Rash: Lavender, Roman Chamomile – Dilute 1 drop with a carrier oil and apply around area of concern. Or 1-2 drops Sandalwood or Myrrh add 1-2 drops coconut oil and apply to affected area
Diarrhea: Digestzen, Roman Chamomile – Dilute 1 drop of oil with a carrier oil and massage around the abdomen. Choose one oil at a time.
Earache & Occasional Ear Discomfort: Melaleuca, Lavender, Basil – Dilute 1-2 drops of Melaleuca and/or Lavender around the ear (NOT inside the ear) along the back of the cheek bone down & around behind the ear. Basil may help with the pain. May put 1 drop on a cotton ball or swab and apply around the ear (not in ear canal).
Teething: Lavender, Roman Chamomile – Mix 1 drop with 1 Tbls of carrier oil and massage around the outside of the face along the jaw line. Or 2 drops of clover in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil and apply to gums.
